How to read books in French (without giving up after 10 pages)
Are you thinking about starting a French novel, but not sure where to begin? Or have you already tried, only to feel completely lost after a few pages? I’ve been there too, with English! Reading in a foreign language can be exciting… and a little overwhelming. But the good news is: you can do it, and enjoy it!
In this article, I’ll share five practical tips on how to read a book in French without giving up. Ready? Let’s get started with chapter 1! 🙂📖
1. Choose a book that is just a little above your level
Here’s my first piece of advice: start slow. Pick a book that’s just above your level: enough to challenge you a little, but not so difficult that you get frustrated.
If you’re new to reading in French, don’t feel like you have to start with Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables… Unless you are an advanced C2 😜 (and even there it might be complicated!)
Instead, depending on your level, you might want to start with:
books for children;
comic books or graphic novels;
teen literature;
books you’ve already read in your own language;
books adapted into movies or series you’ve already watched;
bilingual edition.
Then, you can gradually challenge yourself with more complex novels. Just remember: there’s something for everyone!

2. Don’t try to understand every word
Trying to understand every single word can actually be counterproductive—it breaks the flow and makes reading less enjoyable 🤯. Instead, focus on grasping the general meaning and keep going. You’ll find that this will spark your imagination even more. You have to accept that you won’t understand every single detail, and that’s absolutely fine!
When a word really prevents you from understanding the text, or if a word keeps appearing repeatedly, then it’s worth looking it up. But otherwise, don’t stop to check every unknown word in the dictionary—that would make reading feel slow, choppy, and frustrating.
Remember: what makes reading really fun is getting into the flow and enjoying the story, not pausing at every line. Immersion beats perfection!

3. Take notes en français (but keep it simple!)
Keep a small folded piece of paper in your book 📜—you can even use it as a bookmark—and jot down new essential vocabulary words as you read. But remember: less is more! For example, if you read for 30 minutes, try to note down just one or two words that really stood out to you during that session.
The key is to capture what’s useful without interrupting your flow. Reading should feel fun, not like a homework assignment!

4. Pick a Francophone novel you actually enjoy
This is so important! Do you prefer romance novels, thrillers, adventure stories, or self-help books? Is there a particular author you love?
Either way, you should choose a genre you enjoy, so you don't get bored while reading. One of the first books I read in English was Bridget Jones’ Diary, and it was a blast! I just loved the characters and I knew I loved romantic comedies, so I really enjoyed the story. Plus, I was already somewhat familiar with it from the movie, which made it easier to understand for me!
5. Join our French reading club
