Why real-life French materials are essential to your language journey
Relying only on textbooks to study your favourite foreign language? 😉 Then something might be missing from your language journey: real-life content! Whether it’s following Francophone Tiktokers, tuning in to radio France, or reading your favourite book in French… There’s something for everyone! In this article, I’ll tell you why it’s so important to learn French with authentic materials. 🏋️♀️
Learn French with authentic materials (and not just textbooks!)
When I was a teenager, learning English at school wasn’t exactly fun—endless grammar drills, stressful exams… I often lost my motivation. But one thing that made me really enthusiastic was watching movies in the original version (Twilight, West Side Story, Grease, the Notebook—I was really into romantic comedies back then… 😂).
By doing so, I noticed that some things I’d learned in class started to click. I began understanding words (sometimes full sentences 🙃) and picking up new idiomatic expressions and even slang! Today, I still do this to keep up my English—mainly by listening to podcasts while eating my lunch. And I believe that’s one of the best things you can do to improve and stay motivated while learning a foreign language.
Here’s why authentic materials work so well:
By reading, listening, or watching—and understanding even part of it—you see your progress in action. 💪
You get to learn new words and idiomatic expressions along the way. 📖
You immerse yourself in French culture, experiencing the language like a native. 🥐
It’s fun and entertaining, not just studying from a textbook! 😃

Pick your favourite source of French content
So, how can you start using authentic materials in your daily life? First, you need to choose the kind of media you enjoy the most. Let me walk you through the different options!

Francophone series and movies
Watching series or movies in French is a go-to method—and for good reason! In my humble opinion, it’s one of the most enjoyable ways to bring a foreign language into your daily life. You’ll get exposed to real conversations, slang, and cultural references!
Pro tip: start with the types of shows or movies you already love in your native language! 🎞️
French Youtube channels
YouTube is a goldmine of Francophone content! Whether you’re into travel vlogs, cooking tutorials, self-improvement, or news, there’s something for every interest and level. From quick videos to in-depth documentaries, you’ll find tons of resources for listening to French naturally and for free.
Francophone podcasts
Are you already a podcast fan in your native language? Great news: there’s a wealth of Francophone podcasts covering every topic imaginable! What I love about podcasts is that you can listen to it while multitasking: washing the dishes, cooking, cleaning your house, taking a shower…
To find the perfect podcast, choose a subject you love and Google: “topic + podcast français.” For example, try searching for “astrophysique podcast français” or “cinéma podcast français.”
Radio stations from France
There are tons of radio stations available online that you can watch from anywhere in the world! You can listen live or catch rebroadcasts. Whether you love music or want to stay up to date with the news, there’s a station for every taste. Radio is a great way to immerse yourself in the language! 📻
Francophone magazines and newspapers
Are you a news junkie? Reading articles from Francophone newspapers and magazines is a fantastic way to boost your French while staying up to date with current affairs. You’ll expand your vocabulary, see how formal written French works, and better understand what’s happening in the Francophone world. 📰
Books or audiobooks
If you love reading novels or listening to audiobooks, why not make it part of your language journey? You don’t need to be fluent to start! You can begin with children’s or young adult books, then gradually move on to more complex novels as your confidence grows.

French influencers on social networks
Most of you probably already use Instagram, Facebook or Tiktok. So why not follow some Francophone influencers? Once you start watching videos in French, your algorithm will naturally suggest more and more content from France. It’s an easy way to immerse yourself in the language—just be careful not to scroll for hours! 😅
➡️ And if you don’t know where to start… Here’s a list of authentic French resources you can use! 🎁

Choose content that matches your level
Of course, the type of media you choose—and how you use it—should depend on your level.
If you’re a beginner, start with movies and series with subtitles. I especially recommend Disney or Pixar films, or movies you already know, this time with French dubbing. Reading children’s books is also a great option to build confidence!
If you’re an intermediate learner, it’s time to challenge yourself a little more. Try watching French YouTube channels on topics that genuinely interest you (and don’t hesitate to reduce the speed if needed). You can also start watching movies and series without subtitles, and begin reading online articles to expand your vocabulary.
For advanced learners, this is your chance to go deeper. Dive into specialized podcasts, in-depth radio programs, or challenging novels to refine your vocabulary and master more complex language.

Keep a dedicated vocabulary notebook
Here’s my last tip: keep a small vocabulary notebook and jot down new words or expressions along the way. Little by little, you’ll see how much you’re learning while using authentic materials. 🗒️🖊️
And remember: you don’t need to understand everything. The goal is to get into the flow, and it’s okay if you don’t catch every word (in fact, you probably won’t—unless you’re already an expert in French).
That’s it! I hope this article has inspired you to bring more real-life French into your daily routine and enjoy the journey!
