Join the French conversation group in Carlton - where learning & fun meet

Fellow Melburnians, if you've been quietly wondering whether your French is good enough to actually use — this is for you. Our French conversation group in Carlton has been running for a while now, and what we've built is something a bit special: a fortnightly Saturday gathering where the only rule is that you turn up and give it a go.

No pressure, no performance. Just real conversation, real laughs, and a group of people who get it.

Now you're probably thinking: a French conversation group in Melbourne sounds pretty cool! But how does it actually work? Here are a few hints about what you can expect.

Let your Frenchy voice flow in a relaxed atmosphere right here in Melbourne

Express yourself freely in a supportive, kind environment

I know how learning a language can be challenging, but it doesn’t have to be stressful. At our French conversation group in Carlton, you’ll find a welcoming environment where kindness is the rule of thumb.

By joining our group, you’ll be able to unleash your French in a safe place. We laugh with each other (not at each other!) and encourage and support each other 🙏

What our members say

"Sophie is a patient and non-judgmental teacher who brings out the best in her students. The lessons are fun and varied. It's wonderful to see improvement in my high school French while having such a great time." - Mark, Group Member

Speak French in a casual atmosphere

Here, we step away from the traditional classroom vibe - to enter a more casual, relaxed space! Fancy a cookie during the session? Go for it! Feel free to bring along your favorite cup of tea or coffee - it’s all part of the experience. ☕

Forget textbook dialogues about Jean buying a baguette! In this group, we dive into topics that matter to you. We explore a topic together, play games, have fun. At the end of each session, the members collectively decide the theme of the next one.

What our members say

"I was surprised but pleased to hear that discussion of the news was banned - such a refreshing take!" - Sarah, Group Member

"During the session we were presented with an image on the screen and each asked to discuss what it might be. I had been speaking for a minute or two in French before I even realised. I didn't realise how much vocab I had on that topic." - Kate, Group Member

Small meeting room at Kathleen Syme Library set up for a French conversation session, with a whiteboard listing topics including le cinéma français and le book club, and a table with cookies and drinks

Here’s a sneak peek at the kind of topics we’ve been chatting about lately:

  • We always start with a “Quoi de neuf ?” : a little icebreaker to get the conversation flowing!

  • Favourite movies and series (whether French or not)

  • Favourite foods and party meals

  • French litterature and current affairs (we try to stick to good news, though)

But most importantly we let the conversation flow naturally, adapting to the group’s dynamic and language level!

➡️ Hey there, here are 5 secret benefits of practicing French conversation regularly! 🤫

Expand your social circle and meet fellow croissant enthusiasts in Carlton

Meet like-minded French speakers

Are your friends and family tired of being your go-to audience for language practice? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! Join our Frenchy tribe - a group of people who share your passion for all things “Hexagone”. 🥐

Speaking French is great, but you know what’s even better? Mixing business with pleasure! Joining the group gives you the opportunity to enjoy relaxed conversations with friendly people.

What our members say

"I've loved spending Saturday mornings with other Melburnians keen on expanding their vocabulary, refining their grammatical skills, and sharing personal experiences and thoughts with peers. I've met a group of really beautiful and worldly people with whom I feel comfortable sharing and discussing ideas. Sophie facilitates her groups with thoughtful questioning, personal anecdotes, and pieces of literature and external resources to help group members extend their learning. I highly recommend Sophie's French Tutor program - not just for the exposure to French, but also for the opportunity to get to know interesting and thoughtful people." - Oshaen, Group Member

It allows you to connect with others, to expand your social network and to be more curious about the world around you. Plus, the thrill of nailing a tricky phrase brings so much satisfaction!

Engage and boost your personal growth

Speaking a new language is a great way to step out of your comfort zone! It opens the door to a whole new world, with its own codes and culture. It pushes you to express yourself in ways you wouldn’t normally, even making sounds your mouth isn’t used to (like in “yaourt” 😉)!

All of this helps you build more confidence, adaptability and even creativity. Ultimately, it sharpens your personality! Plus, it’s a fantastic way to explore topics you might not usually talk about - who knows where the conversation will take you!
